Depakote (divalproex sodium) is a drug manufactured by Abbott Laboratories that was designed for use as an anti-seizure drug for epileptics, as well as to treat the manic behavior associated with bipolar disorder.  In more recent years, Depakote has been applied for the purpose of treating migraine headaches as well.  Depakote is available in both a delayed-release tablet and capsule form.

For years, Depakote has been widely known to have serious side effects, and has been linked especially to severe liver damage in certain patients with liver problems, or in children being treated for seizures.  Known serious side effects of Depakote include:

  • Life-threatening pancreatitis
  • Fatal instances of liver damage
  • Increased risk for birth defects in children born to women who use the medication during pregnancy

In fact, the FDA has issued Depakote an official “Black Box” warning for these conditions:

  • Hepatotoxicity (liver damage)
  • Teratogenicity (fetal harm)
  • Pancreatitis (inflammation or infection of the pancreas)

Gruber & Gruber is currently accepting cases involving Depakote.  If you or a loved one have been prescribed Depakote, and have experienced any of the above side effects, contact Gruber & Gruber today for a Free Case Evaluation and to learn of your legal rights, and of how we can help.
